Women in the Halls, a special project of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Georgia, seeks to bring more women to the state Capitol during the annual legislative session. Often, lawmakers overlook our concerns, and the resulting public policies can be disastrous for the women of Georgia. The presence of Women in the Halls will remind lawmakers that they are accountable to the women of Georgia for the decisions that they make.
What do Women in the Halls do?
Every Wednesday during the legislative session (January through March), we will join a lobby training hosted by the American Civil Liberties Union and other progressive groups. You will be briefed on pertinent legislation and how to lobby your elected officials. Then, we’ll arm you with talking points, fact sheets, and everything you need to articulate your views to members of the General Assembly. Together, we’ll fill the halls and fight for responsible legislation for women!

At midnight Friday, the 2008 legislative session ended and for the first time in 3 years no blatant anti-women legislation passed, and a proactive piece of legislation, the Georgia Medical Privacy Act, was introduced and co-sponsored by 16 Senators. We owe our success to you!
A stranger than usual session, we faced some of the most dangerous attempts at restricting a woman's right to choose yet. From defining a fertilized egg as a "person" (in and out of the womb) to giving the death penalty to doctors who perform abortions to limiting minor's access to family planning services to stripping health insurance coverage of preventive and acute services that particularly effect women of childbearing age there seemed to be no limits to the extreme measures undertaken. Rep. Bobby Franklin even attempted to add anti-abortion language to legislation regulating dogs!
But, thanks to your calls, emails, visits, and support throughout this tumultuous session we were able to hold off these dangerous bills. We had over 120 people join us at the Capitol for our Women in the Halls program, sent almost 13,000 emails to targeted legislators, pro-choice supporters showed up in force for over 7 hours of testimony on HR 536, and countless others made calls and volunteered their time to make a difference for the women and men of Georgia. Thank you! |
